BICYCLING TOURS

This description of a bicycle route along the Coastal Route is a combination between cycling and using other kinds of transportation. The stages for one day should not bee too hard on most of you. Still everybody has to decide your own speed.

A cycling trip provides you a total physical experience that remain with you for a long, long time. Sore muscles and frozen fingertips are a part of the challenge while the many rewards include such delights as the special scents of a warm summer day and a feeling of inner peace and harmony.

The Kystriksveien route is ideally suited for cycling tours. Although there are no bicycle paths with special signage, it is quite easy to get oriented along the way. We recommend use of the map series in 1 : 250 000 scale from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA).

Your cycling trip might include a trek along the entire Kystriksveien route or consist of a shorter tour where you reserve a few of your vacation days especially for this purpose or a perhaps just a weekend trip with friends and family.

Welcome to Kystriksveien! The world´s most beautiful tourist road.. Explore the coastline of Norway and enjoy one of Norway's finest tourist roads, or simply find your paradise for relaxation and peace of mind. From Steinkjer in the South to Bodø in the North the Kystriksveien road winds 650 km. through a varying and inviting landscape.

You will find a presentation of each county with detailed information from each municipality to your right.

Along the Kystriksveien road you find many well known sights. A visit to The fishing village Sør-Gjæslingan is worthwhile. This was once one of the most important fishing villages south of Lofoten. In Rørvik lies the national culture centre of coastal Norway, Norveg (opens in June 04), where you can learn about the Norwegian coast history through 10.000 years.

Lekamøya, Torghatten, De Syv Søstre, Dønnamannen and Hestmannen are wellknown mountains, that many Norwegians know from different legends. The mountain Torghatten, with a big hole right through, lies only 15 km away from Brønnøysund and is a "must" for visitors.

In Meløy just north of the Artic Circle by Holandsfjorden, you can see the glacier Svartisen. It is a magnificent sight. You can also reach the glacier by shuttle boat across the fjord, ( 10 minutes) and maybe take a walk on the glacier. 150 km further north lies the world´s strongest tidal current, Saltstraumen, with fantastic possibilities for fishing.

The weather is not in our hands, but we can promise you many great experiences along the Kystriksveien route.

Welcome, and enjoy your trip!

STEINKJER

Steinkjer is the southernmost town along the Kystriksveien. To reach road RV 17, turn off highway E-6 direction Namsos just 6 km north of Steinkjer. Steinkjer is modern town with an ancient history. Here you will find everything from ancient monuments to hightech IT companies.

BODØ

Bodø is the administrative centre for Nordland county authority. It is the northernmost town on the Coastal Route and a modern commercial centre situated in beautiful natural surroundings with views of the Børvasstindene peaks in the south and Landegode and Lofoten mountains in the north.

Bodø´s archipelago has a multitude of small island communities and a rich bird life. No other town in the world has a greater population of sea eagles. If you are lucky you may see the eagle glide across the sky, and this sight will entitle you to membership of the worldÕs only sea eagle club!

Visit Saltstraumen when the tide is at its highest and marvel at the forces of nature. Every six hours, 400 mill m3 of water at speeds up to 20 knots rush through the 150 metres wide and 3 km long sound connecting the Saltenfjord and the Skjerstadfjord. The powerful whirlpools can be up to 10 metres in diameter and 4-5 metres deep.

Step ashore at Kjerringøy, enjoy the variety and contrasts of nature and find your very own holiday paradise ! Author Knut Hamsun visited Kjerringøy in 1879 and found inspiration and encouragement for his writing.
