StarGate is a record producing and songwriting team, composed of Tor Erik Hermansen from Askim and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen from Trondheim, based in New York City. The team´s genres include R&B, pop and hip hop. StarGate was established in Trondheim.
StarGate broke into the American recording industry in 2006, with the release of the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, "So Sick", produced and co-written by the team and performed by singer Ne-Yo. They also produced and co-wrote with Espen Lind and singer Beyoncé Knowles her worldwide hit single "Irreplaceable", which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for ten consecutive weeks. Throughout their career they have been noted for their extensive work with Rihanna, writing and producing three consecutive Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles with Rihanna in 2010 and 2011.
StarGate has worked with various American artists and received mainstream awards including the Songwriters of the Year accolade at the 2007 ASCAP/PRS Awards and the 2009 ASCAP Pop Songwriters of the Year. They have also been named the Number One Producers of the Year on the Billboard Hot 100 Year End Chart in 2006 and 2008, and Hitmakers of the Year in Rolling Stone magazine in 2008. A documentary about Stargate, which follows the duo from childhood through to their careers in America, aired in Norway on 25 February 2012.
The latest is "Diamonds" a song by recording artist Rihanna, from her seventh studio album "Unapologetic" (2012). It was composed by Sia Furler, Benjamin "Benny Blanco" Levin, Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen. It was produced by Blanco, as well as Eriksen and Hermansen under their production name StarGate. "Diamonds" premiered on September 26, 2012, during the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show and was released as a digital download the following day. Def Jam Recordings serviced the single to contemporary hit radio in the United States on October 2. Musically, "Diamonds" is a mid-tempo pop ballad with influences of electronic and soul music. The song is a departure from the theme of "unhealthy relationships" that are evident in several of Rihanna´s previous singles.
Another Norwegian Magnus Voll Mathiassen (a.k.a. MVM), a graphic designer and illustrator from Drammen, was picked out by Rihanna and used on the artist 7th release, "Unapologetic". MVM can take any subject or object and turn it into an abstract, eye-dilating work of art. His latest pieces are portraits of musicians like Rihanna, M.I.A., Azealia Banks, and Nicki Minaj, who all look stunning in his swirling, pop renditions.
