Øksfjord is the administrative centre of the municipality. It is located at the mouth of the Øksfjorden on the mainland. The area also has several glaciers. The Øksfjordjøkel glacier is the largest and perhaps the most challenging. The smaller one is Langfjordjøkel.

From Øksfjord, you cross the fjord by ferry followed by a 20 minute drive to the village of Nuvsvåg. Nuvsvåg is a fishing village is on the mainland but relies on a ferry crossing (10 minutes) to reach the municipal centre of Øksfjord.

Øksfjord Church is located in this village and it is the main church for the municipality. Since most of Loppa municipality is inaccessible by car, Øksfjord is a major transportation hub with regular car ferry connections to the Nuvsvåg, Bergsfjord, and Sør-Tverrfjord areas.
