Andørja island is located in the northeastern half of the present-day municipality of Ibestad. Andørja is Northern Europe mountain richest island, with eleven peaks over 1000 meters. The highest peak is Langlitinden with 1277 meters above sea level, and it is with it also the highest mountain on an island in Scandinavia. The island has a distinctive fjord, Straumsbotn, which shares the island roughly in half. Andørja Church in Engenes was the church for the whole municipality.

In 1994 Andørja was connected to the mainland by the construction of Mjøsund bridge. Andørja is also connected to the neighboring island Rolla via Ibestad tunnel, which is 3,396 meters long undersea road tunnel. There are also boat connection from Engenes between Harstad and Tromsø.
