DRAMMEN MUSEUM

The main building of Drammen´s museum is located in the centre of the city on the Strømsø side of the river. In earlier years this was an elegant country house on the magnificent landed property Marienlyst. Most of this area is nowadays used for sports activities, but the museum itself lies in an intimate green lung – shielded from the huzzle and buzzle of the outside world.

The museum can offer a full range of museum exhibitions. The main building contains rose-painted wooden chests and cupboards from the inland valleys Hallingdal and Numedal, town furniture, Norwegian 18th century baroque silver, Norwegian and northern European glass, and a historical exhibition of Drammen. The impressions are many and overwhelming. And in the Lyche Pavilion temporary art exhibitions are put on throughout the year.

The museum also takes care of the two largest remaining manors in Drammen. Austad Manor, a listed building, dates from 1808 and is beautifully located on the slopes behind Marienlyst. The building is mostly used for concerts and other special occasions and is not open to the public on a daily basis. Gulskogen Manor is thoroughly described elsewhere on this web site.

Just a short walk from the car park at the Spiral top another experience lies in wait. Following the marked walking trails you will suddenly find yourself in the middle of an open-air museum. Barns, a forge, storehouses, farmhouses, a sawmill, a water mill and town houses suddenly appear in small groupings, like a scene from Norwegian history. Drammens Museum has collected and reconstructed 25 houses from the whole of Buskerud County.

A cultural landscape has been formed to present earlier farming methods and building traditions in the county. Many of the buildings are open to the public during the summer months, and, if you are lucky, you can buy old-fashioned boiled sweets in the old village store. A visit here offers a great opportunity to experience history and impressive countryside at the same time.
