Gamvik municipality has aproximately 1.100 inhabitants and lies east on Nordkynhalvøya and covers a area of 1.415,2 km2. The municipality is devided into three with the administrative centre Mehamn with aproximately 850 inhabitants, Gamvik with approximately 250 and Skjånes with approximately 210. The airport in Mehamn have daily flights with the rest of the country and the Coastal Steamer (Hurtigruten) has daily departures. Mehamn Hotel boasts the most northenly room in mainland Europe (no. 301).

The main industry in Gamvik is fish and we export fish all around the world. Commercial fishing has a long tradition in Gamvik and a lot of people are dependent on fish as their main source of income. The municipality is well known for it´s rich nature, fishing rivers and waters, and a active cultural life.

Slettnes lighthouse, the most northenly lighthouse in mainland EuropeAfter meteorological terms the areas around Gamvik have no summer. A summermonth shall have an average of at least 10 degrees. At Slettnes Lighthouse the warmest month is August with 9,6 degrees. Gamvik have therefore winter, spring and autumn even if they have Midnight Sun and long terms with nice summerweather.

FISHING

Deep sea fishing enthusiasts can take a fishing trip out on the ocean. You can fish for salmon, sea trout and Arctic trout. Be aware that there are a number of special rules in regards to fishing. Remember to purchase a fishing licence.
