Nesset municipality has approximately 3.060 inhabitants and covers a area of 1.046,2 km2. The farm (Nesset Prestegård) has given name to the township. Orginally it was an old official residence. The farm was devided into two parts, where one was crown land. Today, much of it is sold. The settling probably originates from before the Viking Age.

Today there are ten houses on the farm, the former number was fourteen, seven of the houses are sceduled as ancient monumenst. On 29 of July 1921, when the Bjørnson stone monument was unveiled, there was 3000 people gathered at the rectory. Since 1597 about 30 vicars have lived at the rectory of Nesset.

THE NESSET RECTORY (PRESTEGÅRD)

This rectory was the childhood home of the author Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (1832-1910). He wrote: "Romsdalen is the small part of the world I love the most. Here I evolved. Of this way of life and thhese people am I marked." Bjørnson received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1903. The museum at the rectory is open during the summer season.

THE ROCK-CARVINGS AT BOGGESTRANDA

Date from a time when people lived from hunting and fishing. They are possibly records of valutable hunting grounds and large herds of game, carved onto the mountain during the Stone Age. The carvings can be found in three separate locations and the oldest dates back over 4000 years.

THE MARDALSFOSSEN WATERFALL

Is to be found in the Eikesdal valley and boasts Northern Europe's highest free-falling waterfall at 297 metres. The Mardøla river is dammed, but the watertall is still an impressive sight when the reservoirs are emtied between 20th June and 20th August. There is a 45-minute walk from the parking in Mardalen.

A MONUMENTAL STONE

Arnesteinen at Utigard. "I wonder what I shall discover over the high mountains". A quotation from the novel Arne, wrote by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. The monumental stone is put up as a memory of the visit of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. He visited Eikesdalen in 1858 and wrote parts of the famous novel there, sitting under a huge elm tree.

THE AURSJØVEIEN (FINSETLIA) ROAD

Starts in Finset in Eikesdal. The narrow, winding road continues alongside the Aursjødam (862 m ab. sea level) and runs down the Litledalen valley to Sunndalsøra. The road offers many magnificent views and is a good starting point for walking trips in the mountains. Tollroad, open from mid-June.
