Directly under the Polar Circle, right in the middle of Helgeland's multitude of islands and skerries, lies the community of Lurøy. Lurøy municipality has approximately 1.900 inhabitants and covers a area of 263,8 km2. Administration centre is Lurøy and the principal industries are fishing, sea farming and agriculture. By following Coastal Route (Rv 17), the first sight to greet the visitor is an unusually beautiful coastal strip. To the south, the Sila tunnel, to the north, Eidhaugen bordering Rødøy. To the west, well-known mountains such as Lovund and Horseman (Hestmannen), border the sea.

The islands of Lurøy show nature at its best. The people here live in small communities on the mainland or the islands, with easy access to nature and outdoor activities. The varied landscape offers numerous opportunities for recreation.

THE HORSEMAN

The unique mountain formation known as the Horseman is a famous landmark. A little bit north of Mount Hestmannen is Selsøysvik Gamle Handelssted (an old trading post) where they have recreated activities from the 1770's. Another restored trading post (Falch Gamle Handelssted) can be found in Tjogsfjorden which has a unique antique collection from the 1930's. Just north of Hestmannen is the old trading centre of Selsøyvik. Founded in the 1770´s Selsøyvik is still a thriving community with a grocery store, fish farms, shipping agency and tanker facilities. Both Mount Rødøyløva and Mount Hestmannen (the Horseman) lies near the shipping lanes and has always been an identification mark for sailers.

LOVUND

The island of Lovund has a rich bird life and a prominent fish-farming industry. Hundreds of thousands of puffins arrive here during summer. Lovund has very good facilities for tourists. Learn about the island’s history at the heritage centre.

GRØNSVIK FORTRESS

Grønsvik Fortress is one of the most well preserved German fortresses from World War II. It is close to the Rv 17 and has a car park with a picnic area and a tourist office.
