Gjesdal is an inland mountain community, situated between Jæren and Dalane. It has an area of 617,6 km2. The township/municipality has been in rapid development the last few years. Population is on the increase and new enterprises are being established. Life is good in Gjesdal. We have practically limitless nature right outside our doors and the cultural activities organized by private interest and study groups seem endless. Service industries have also multiplied of late, so most necessities can be attended to within our own borders.

A total of approximately 9.750 people lives in Gjesdal, 65% of them in Ålgård, the seat of the municipal administration. Other urban settlements are Oltedal with about 700 inhabitants, and Gilja with about 200. Gjesdal is an agricultural community with emphasis on livestock, particularly sheep. Most of the crops are used to feed our livestock industry has become an important part of the local economy. The textile industry is the most important one, but we also have others such at timber, iron and metal, canneries, etc. Electric power is produced at the power stations at Maudal, Oltedal and Oltesvik.

Gjesdal is an attractive recreation area with wide open plateau's, mountains, valleys and lakes. The road from Byrkjedal to Bjerkreim passes through the famous Gloppedalsura, said to be the scree with the largest boulders in northern Europe.


The region´s most visited restaurant and factory outlet. Byrkjedalstunet is an old cheese house that has been remodelled to become a chandlery and restaurant. You can buy candles or try your hand at making your own. Open: Year round. Byrkjedalstunet is located at the foot of Gloppedalsura off Route 45.


The largest amusement park in western Norway! Here you can experience the magic Chocolate Factory where children can make real Freia milk chocolate. The park has go-carts, the Bromle train, radio cars, bumper boats, Norway's longest alpine slide run and Humla, Norway's largest merry go-round. Free admission for everyone under 90 cm. Open: May to mid-September: 10:00-18:00. Open every day during school vacation, otherwise during weekends. Admission covers unlimited use of all attractions and entertainment. A veritable El Dorado for the whole family. Located in scenic surroundings at Ålgård.


The Lima Farm, with six older buildings and plenty of opportunities for recreational activities, is located in a scenic agricultural landscape with a rich history overlooking mountains and lakes. Norway's ninth largest waterfall (90-metre drop) end one of the county's most popular tourist attractions. Marked trail. Steep path from the parking lot; some stretches with steps and chain railing. Excellent fishing lakes/rivers: The rivers Figgjoelva and Frafjordelva as well as the lakes Øygardsvatnet, Edlandsvatnet, Limavatnet and Flassavatnet. In Gjesdel you can buy a fishing license either et Ålgard Sport (off Route 506), Sport´n or Ålgard Hotel. Ålgard Hotel has easy access for disabled persons.
