Meldal muncipality has approximately 4.000 inhabitants and covers a area of 612,5 km2. Meldal boasts one of Norway´s best salmon rivers, the Orkla. Go to a concert in an old mine, take a ride on the preserved railwayline, walk the Pilgrim´s Way, watch ski jumping at Kløvsteinbakken or just enjoy the scenery. The stunning Resdalen valley is an exellent start point for trips into Trollheimen and to the protected farmsteads at Vålåskaret.

Sæterdalen, with wide range of outdoor activities and cultural attractions is also worth a visit. Løkken Verk is a working village, but it´s the town´s mining history that usually fascinates visitors. Meldal is also home to a large regional museum. In the railway exhibition in the Information Centre of ORKLA Industrial Museum in the middle of Løkken Verk, some of the oldest equipments are shown, among other things "the Kings Coach" and the oldest alternating current locomotive in the world, the Thamshavn railways Locomotive No. 2. ORKLA INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM

The Museum preserves industrial and technical pieces of historical interest in the districts of Orkdal and Meldal, developing these into objects of attraction, and it also presents the local history of industry and labour in an informative, exciting manner. At present you may experience the Thamshavn Railway, the world's oldest alternating-current-driven railway, and travel in carriages which were delivered at the 1908 opening of and railway. Or you may experience the "Cathedral of Work and Toil", i.e. the Old Mine, where the miner fought his daily battle against rocks. Løkken Verk offers a great variety of choice to a person looking for exciting experiences. The Museum Center in the middle of Løkken Verk visually presents the history of the Thamshavn Railway and the mining industry.

Orkla Industrial Museum invites you to experiences beyond the purely historical ones. We arrange trips to Løkken Verk in the way in which you prefer. A ride in one's own Thamshavn Railway dining carriage is a pleasant experience for anyone. In this carriage you may be served anything from a simple cup of coffee with waffles to a full three-course meal. In the Old Mine an exciting guided tour may include a concert or a surprise lunch. The options are plentiful, imagination only sets the limits.

THE THAMSHAVN RAILWAY

The Thamshavn Railway was constructed to carry cuperouspyrite ore from the Løkken Mines. When opened in 1908, it was Norway's first electrical railway. At present Thamshavn Railway is the world's oldest alternating- current-driven railway. From the beginning the Thamshavn Railway was carrying passengers, and the passenger trains continued moving until 1963, when the bus system took over. In 1974 when the Løkken mine production was reorganised, the pyrite-ore trains were also taken out of use. In 1982 a new era started in the railway history. The Thamshavn Railway Friends Assosiation was formed, with the aim of restoring the railway and its equipment. The following year, on the day of the 75 years' anniversary of the railway opening, the first museum train started moving. Now you may travel by train between Løkken Verk and Fannrem in exactly the same carriages as in 1908.

LØKKEN STATION

You may also find the oldest equipment displayed at the Railway Museum at Løkken Station. Here you can see the world's oldest alternating-current engine, and the "Kings Coatch", i.e. the only motorized saloon carriage in use. The Railway museum has also theme exhibitions showing the sabotage actions against the Thamshavn Railway during Second World War, and the story of the Thamshavn Railway founder, Minister Christian Thams.

THE OLD MINE

The Old Mine is called "Cathedral of Work and Toil". You can hardly find a more honourable name of what used to be the old miners' place for work from the middle of the 17th century until a couple of centuries later. To keep himself and his family alive, the miner would here fight a daily battle against the resistant ore. The ore was extracted by the firesetting method. Big fires were lit alongside the rocks to make them crack. After the flames died and the smoke was ventilated, the miner went to work with his pick, breaking loose stones where the rocks had cracked. In this way the mine slowely but surely grew.

The largest room which you as a tourist now may enter is called the Fagerli Hall. It has a floor area of 1.300 square metres and is 15 metres high below the ceiling. Here you really get the sense of being in a cathedral. As a consert hall the Fagerli Hall is quite unique, with extraordinarily fine acoustics. A number of well-known artists from Norway and abroad have held conserts here. This is also the arena where the specially written play "Løkkenbusen", was performed.

The local community Løkken Verk has developed during 300 years of mining industry. The ore in Løkken field was discovered in 1652 and the mines put into operation in 1654. Later this find proved to be one of the greatest cuperous-pyrite deposits in the world. During the first 250 years copper was the main product of the mines, followed by a period where both copper and sulphur were extracted. Finally copper, zink and silver were the Løkken Mines products.

It was not until the start of the 20th century that an industrial-scale mining fully developed. The architect Christian Thams was the initator of the Orkla Grube-Aktiebolag (Orkla Mining Company), and he started one of the largest industrial enterprises in Norway at that time. Production premises, power plants, offices, shops and housing units were all required in the modern industrial society. Shortly afterwards, however, Mr. Thams had to give up because of disagreement with other owners and employees. But what he founded grew to become one of Norway's most solid industrial undertakings and the precursor of the present Orkla Group.

FISHING

Orkla is known to be one of the best salmon rivers in Norway. There are many good catch reports over the last years. Salmon fishing in Orkla is an experience for life. In the river Orkla you may find so called open streams offered to a cheap price, and also more expensive and exclusive streams. You can fish in a stream called The cat's stream and The Rock stream. The stream is situated in Meldal parish, between Å and Meldal community centre. The stream is actually two different sites, each at approximately 400 metres in length. Both of them with conditions for many types of fishing.
